The North Atlantic surrounding Iceland
For Iceland, being situated in "the middle of nowhere", crossing the sea was the only way to explore and trade with other countries.
Since Greenland, the country closest to Iceland, did not offer much in terms of trade, the UK, Norway and Denmark were the destination of most ships.
The stamps were cancelled not in Iceland but when they reached the port. In some cases, stamps bear 2 cancels, with the foreign one as an arrival cancel.
The abundancy of foreign cancels from Edinburgh, Bergen and Copenhagen shows the importance of trade and mail to these countries.
However, it seems that there is an amazing number of other less common destinations, and I hope that you discover some on these pages that you have never seen before.
The red x indicate the 38 locations of the cancels.
